"Due to a manufacturing defect, cracks may develop in the upper
universal joint of the steering intermediate shaft assembly. Over time,
these cracks can widen due to repeated stress and can lead to a loss of
steering control."

Oops that would be a brown underwear moment.

Jeez, you reckon they could get shit as simple as this right. but it's
been going on for years and apparently they don't learn by their own
mistakes.

From 2010 :)

What you don't seem to realise is that Toyota get the shafts from OEM
suppliers. Looks like one of the OEM suppliers had a batch of bad yoke
forgings. It happens.

*Apparently*?? You have a cite? You didn't have when I asked previously.

FWIW, the US Corolla used the E140 body and introduced EPS in 2007. In
Australia, that generation used the E150 body and, IIRC, had a different
EPS system that was introduced by at least 2010 (since my 2010 Corolla
had it). I couldn't fault my EPS except for vagueness at highway
cruising speeds, something that is a *feature* of EPS systems.
