**Interesting. I would have thought Subaru would be in the middle of the
pack and Lexus at the top. Mercedes (not stated) would be at the bottom
of course.

Not surprised by that but surprised Audi and BMW being 7th and 8th,
neither brand has a stella reliability record.
Even more surprising is Volvo only 15th, my experience with a couple of
Volvo's has found them to be very reliable but I did hear that their
newer 4 cyl engines can be problematic.
Some cars do surprise me though, a mates son hasn't got a lot of money
to spend on a car and he's known for mistreating cars, he bought an old
Peugeot 308 for not much money and I didn't think that it would last
very long but so far its defied my prediction and has lasted around 3
yrs without giving much trouble, I've replaced its thermostat housing
and a valve cover gasket and not much else has gone wrong.

Hi Jonz, Not had any direct experience with those, friends had one and I
never heard any bad stories about it but they aren't the sort of people
to whinge about car problems.
I have seen reports on line that say it depends on the exact model, some
are bullet proof others not so much, also depends on how well they have
been maintained so buying one with a good service record would be advisable.

All the ones i`ve seen online *look* OK. (Books and covers tho) They
appear to be a solid vehicle, and with low range 4x4 on the ones i`d be
looking at.
Something like this vintage and price. (Cant go overboard on the
spending ;) )

Reckon they`d be a good off roader.

There was one in Canberra $7000, 2012, looked just the one All
receipts and books and spotless......Gone by the time I enquired! :(

what suburb in Melb its actually located?

Reckon they`d be a good off roader.
Depends what your "off road" needs are, I doubt that they would match a
Landcruiser or a Patrol off road but with the right tyres they would do
okay in many off road situations.

Buying something like that can be a gamble, if you are willing to take
that gamble you could get very lucky.
I thought that buying my MB C240 was a gamble, only previous experience
I'd had with the MB was with trucks and buses, turned out to be a very
good gamble, had it nearly 8yrs, done about 70,000km and had bugger all
trouble with it and despite being 22yrs old its still drives very well.
For the sort of money you are talking about IMHO its worth the gamble,
in today's money $7k is bugger all to pay for any car.
BTW the Porsche Cayenne of the same era is pretty much the same car
mechanically so if you can't find a VW then look for a Porsche with the
same spec.

Yep, the only concern is clearance really (and driver ability). ;) Ive
had my Cherokee in some fairly rugged terrain. (Still have`nt fitted the
lift kit, or it could go further.) Don`t want to fuck the under
carriage. Uni bodies dont like getting thumped by rocks ;).

Indeed, The Jeep does everything required of it. However, interior
size and fuel consumption are something of a problem.. I`ll keep
looking> ;)

Not surprised by that
Looking at the details, it's easy to see that it isn't surprising - but
also that it's a completely meaningless survey.

Since that's not me that would explain why it doesn't contradict
anything I've been saying.

In fact looking at the detail it validates it.
