The rear vision mirror on a friend's car has fallen off (the type that is glued to the windscreen).
Is there a cheap substitute for the excessively expensive "Rear Vision Mirror Adhesive" that is sold
by auto parts shops?

Would 5 minute Araldite do the job?

Thanks.

The rear vision mirror adhesive is 2 pak. It probably is araldite. But I
can't remember it being expensive.

sand the screen with 1000 wet and dry , same with the stem and wash
with clean alcohol , add several drops of $1.00 a tube super clue and
tape in place keeping it out of the direct sun for 24 hours . There you
go , if its left in direct 40 deg heat it may fall off again but
generally wont do so for at least a couple of years .
Use some care and dont clue your self .

Most hardware joints carry the right stuff.
IIRC, Araldite is too strong and may cause the glass to break.

Yep , sure does, used Araldite on dads Fairlaine mirror, no problems for 2
years until he bumped it trying to fit something into the car, took half the
thickness of the glass out under it's "footprint" with it, but araldited it
back in again, no problems :)

All mirrors I've seen are attached to the windscreen but they are attached
in such a way that even pulling with a great deal of force would not cause
it to budge. These things are designed and tested so that kind of thing
doesn't happen. But in the extremely unlikely event it did, I would take it
back to the dealer rather than try and do some dodgy job yourself.

Just one word of warning. My daughter replaced her own mirror using the two
pack "proper stuff". She first removed the piece of metal from the mirror
and glued it on first. Worked well, but when refitting the mirror she must
have levered too much and cracked the glass. Nice split about 150mm long.
After a couple of days heat cycling in the sun it reached from top to
bottom. I suspect some excess glue may have made the mirror tight to refit.

The windscreen replacement person removed the whole mirror and "piece of
metal" in one go from the old screen and glued it in one piece without
dismantling.. He counted to 40 then said that's it and then fitted the new
windscreen into the vehicle. It's mighty powerful stuff. And quick.

Bearing Service sell the 2 pac stuff or a Ford dealer.

The last lot I got was $12 I think.

Bearing Service have a new name now, I think it's BSC.

so are mine
even those that fell off after 15 years of service

what makes you think that only "Your Friendly Local Dealer" mechanics
can fix things properly

they are held on with glue
you buy some glue
and glue it back on
what is dodgy about that

but your a brainless twit who knows nothing about car repairs other than
making your local dealer richer
