im looking at installing an air horn in my VL - what is the legality of them
in victoria? are the dual-horn ones at Auto-barn legal?
also, are they easy to install? or should i get it done professionally
They are usually simple to install. I have air horns in a Land Rover 2A
with all wheel drum brakes and often towing a trailer, in Victoria.
Because of tyre noise, transmission whine etc. if I press the standard
horn I can't hear it to know if it is working, so I fitted air horns.

I use the air horns for emergencies and if I don't bother other people I
don't reckon the Police will bother me either.

How do you get the air? From a compressor?

The compressor comes with the horns usually.

Oh yes, I am a professional.. lol. I specialise in putting airhorns
into airbags. I'll be into cloning next. A new VL from a paint chip.

If you only use the horns in an emergency, then the police are unlikely
to give you any grief. Then again, knowing Victoria...

I have dual air-horns on my Magna. Took me a couple of hours to
install, but I'm not very mechanically competent. Got them working in
the end though. You will probably need to upgrade your fuse for the
horn circuit. The compressors for air horns use a lot more power than
your typical electronic horn.

Alex.

the end though. You will probably need to upgrade your fuse for the

There is also a delay until the compressor picks up enough revs to provide
enough air. Keeping the air lines as short as possible helps dramatically,
but keeping your original horn as well and using a relay to drive the air
horns is the best. Adds that little extra bit of noise so the wankers with
the duf-duf cars have a small chance of hearing.

You can add a switch so the air horns can be turned on or off at will and
this may help with the legal side but I don't know what the Regs say.
Hope this helps,
Peter

If the fuse isn't large enough then the wiring probably isn't either.

Electromagnetic. Nothing very much electronic about them.

If the existing wiring isn't up to the job, fit a relay and heavier
wiring, don't just fudge it by fitting a bigger fuse!

You'd probably get away with just swapping the fuse, as long as you only use
the air horn in short bursts. The increase in power through the wires for
the air horn vs the standard horn won't be *that* dramatic as to melt the
wires - unless you want to pump out a full air horn rendition of stairway to
heaven :)

Of couse, if you end up slumped over the wheel after a large crash, your car
might burn to the ground before emergency service can arrive. hehe.

Either way, the original wires are quite probably a higher grade than the
original fuse.

AFAIK VL's are legal in all states of AU - it's the backward cap mob that
should be outlawed ;-)
are the dual-horn ones at Auto-barn legal?
yep they are fine - it's their usage that may get you into trouble (ie
inappropriate use)
also, are they easy to install? or should i get it done professionally
Easily installed - but be sure to use a relay switch.

Check with your local transport dept.

If you have a little knowledge about how to wire things correctly, then yes,
they're easy to install. You could go silly like a bloke I know who decided
to install twin truck air horns in his 4Runner, complete with a Self
Levelling Suspension compressor from a late model Fairlane and a small gas
bottle used as an air storage medium to power the horns. Used to scare the
shit out of any dickhead driver! :)

As long as it doesn't play music it should be fine. Musical horns are
illegal!
also, are they easy to install?
Do you know the basics of 12DC car systems? If so, it's relatively easy.
Most air horns will require a relay so, it's in your best interest to use
one.
or should i get it done professionally
You don't need a professional, just a mechanic with some basic brains should
do it.
