Post by Mighty Mouseso we're expected to believe he turned a car worth only $1.5k into one
worth $12.5k just by putting a new engine in it? hmm..does sound sus. if
the engine was crap most likely the rest of it was also.
Actually Felix I don't expect you to do a thing. I never do. You ask and
I'll tell you, but what you decide to do after that is your business. As
I've mentioned to you before, I really don't care what you choose to
believe :)
As for the car itself, it belonged to the mother of a friend of mine who
I'm sorry to say is undergoing end of life care in a palliative ward as
we speak after a long battle with liver cancer. She bought the car brand
new, and I actually took her to buy it and did the deal for her at
Harrison Hyundai in Melton. I've known the car since the day she first
picked it up, and I've serviced it exclusively while she's owned it. It
never went anywhere near a dealership. Not even for the first free service.
When she became too ill to drive about a year go, she offered the car to
me for my son, and she wanted to give it to me for free. I refused to
accept it for free, and being the pig headed old stick that she was she
refused to accept any money. In the end we compromised. She needed a new
hot water service installed at her house, so I organised and paid for
that to be done in exchange for the car.
The cost was 1500 bucks, and everyone was happy.
The car itself was in decent condition having done 77 thousand km's. It
had a few minor marks on it and needed a good clean, and all I had to do
to get it roadworthied was to give it a wash and clean inside, and
repaint the front bumper as she'd scraped the corner.
It's problem was that like many of the breed, it suffered from the
"Elantra Tick".
You can google it if you wish, but generally speaking Hyundai used a
crap batch of pistons on their G4NB engines between 2012-2015 which,
after a while developed a piston slap issue. The problem basically
stemmed from a faulty layer of a graphite based coating applied to the
piston skirts as a friction reduction medium which peeled off
prematurely, and when it did it opened up the piston to bore clearance
and caused the piston to slap.
It wasn't terminal and the engine would run for ages with the problem,
and many do today. However I decided to rebuild the engine with a rebore
and after market pistons which fixes the problem, and while I had it
apart I reconditioned the cylinder head, replaced the timing chain and
did a few other things. Essentially after only 77 thousand km's most of
the engine's components were in excellent condition, but there are
certain elements I don't like to reuse once the engine has been
dismantled and they were replaced.
The engine was rebuilt some time ago & runs fine, and the car gets used
everyday with my kid driving it to school and me picking him up from
work 2 nights a week. It drives just fine, doesn't have any issues and I
don't expect there to be.
It's a good little car and he likes it. That's all that matters to me.
