You have to wonder what sort of person "suffers for decades" with a
software product when there are many alternatives.
I've been using a Mac mini for about 8yrs and I've almost forgotten
how to use a Windows computer.
Yes but Mac's are specifically marketed to and designed for simpletons
:-)
ROTFL, that's not a nice thing to say about your buddy xeno.
ROTFL :)

The cracking from within the FLC is starting to appear :)

The cracking from within the FLCJC began years ago and it’s in full flight
now. Notice, for instance, that no one is backing your claims. I guess even
the FLCJC has worked out that all your claims, like you, are full of shit!

Where is there an index of the year's fatality count?  Surely
the cops
must have one and it would make interesting reading? Car
model/drunk-sober/drugs/terrain/sex/speed/day/night/wet/dry/
ethnicity/windy/
and even IQ?
The cops would have most of that data. One item of data
collection might be somewhat fraught: IQ, difficult to collect
such data from dead people. Really, the victims do need a
functioning brain in order to permit their IQ data to be
gathered and assessed.
For that matter, how many *living* people have ever had an IQ
test? And, no, those stupid little online IQ tests don't count.
Given that one's IQ changes over time, what relevance would a
20 or 30 year out of date IQ test have? IQ is generally thought
to have peaked between ages 20-25. Thereafter IQ has a steady
decline until age 70 whereupon the decline becomes more rapid.
My last IQ test was done in *1978* during psychometric testing
at an age where IQ is generally thought to have peaked - and it
was the real deal, a requirement for overseas work. Would those
results be relevant now? Likely not.
you're correct about IQ. fyi I used to administer IQ tests. IQ,
and mental ability in general, deteriorates significantly during
ones lifetime. no one is exempt!
What I thought humorous was the thought of getting victims of
fatal accidents to do an IQ test. Though he survived, Darren
should have been made to do an IQ test after he headbutted those
vehicles (according to his claim) on two separate occasions.
Guaranteed to be a sub-par result, especially in the light of his
subsequent activities!
in my twenties my IQ was 125. hate to think what it is now. :(
Elon Musk is 160, and Einstein was too. Bill Gates about the same.
We had to do a battery of IQ tests at tech college. The interesting
result was that IQ appeared to be the inverse of success in the exams.
pity the guy that shot Trump wasn't aiming at Gates, and didn't
miss. it would have been just payback for the abomination called
windows we have suffered with for decades. :)
What a lovely fellow you are, Gates is one of the worlds major
philanthropic donors. Nobody forced you to use Windows. Maybe your
problems were due to your own incompetence.
You have to wonder what sort of person "suffers for decades"
everyone who has used windows.
So you're speaking for all Windows users? The vast majority have had
few if any problems.
it's taken them three decades to get all (most of?) the bugs out. it
wasn't until XP that windows became reasonably stable. before that
freezing, shut down issues, bsods, hardware issues, etc., etc., OS/2 ran
each program in it's own memory slot (for example) so a program crash
didn't crash the OS
More often than not, any problems have been due to drivers supplied by
third party companies.
and until recently windows didn't deal with that by certifying them
with a software product when there are many alternatives.

What a cunning marketing plan!

For the record, even Mac OS suffers from that issue - to a degree.

It even gets more interesting with the Mac file system. Apple brought
out a new file system called APFS which handles SSD drives better than
the previous HFS+. APFS became the default format for Mac computers from
then on. Bad move because, over time, the APFS file system on a platter
drive began to bog down as data and programs were added - really badly
bogged down too. I ended up putting a 1TB SSD drive in that computer, a
2014 i5 Mac Mini with 8 Gig of RAM, and, as expected, it now runs really
fast on the APFS file system. My other current Mac Mini, a 2014 i7 with
16 Gig of RAM, has a fusion drive - a combo of 1TB platter drive and a
128 Gig SSD running APFS - and it has yet to bog down. I don't expect it to.

If I recall correctly, three big issues with slowdown in Windows
computers. The two issues most easily dealt with were fragmented drive
platters and clogged up registries. The fragmented platter issue should
have gone away with SSD drives and there are plenty of programs out
there to clean up the registry entries. The third issue was, and
remains, malware. And it's not just the malware that gets in to the
system surreptitiously - it's the other kind that wittingly or
unwittingly gets installed by the user. Like those little *helper apps*
that get installed, by default usually, when a program is installed.
They are the reason I never used to do *default installs*. A lot of them
seem to be TSRs that just eat up CPU cycles. The worst I saw was a
computer that took a whole 5 minutes to respond to a mouse click.
Between the virii and the "helper apps", there were insufficient CPU
cycles to deal with the demand.

Not to worry, I *inherited* a lot of computers that way, this Acer
laptop being one such. In 10 years it had hardly been used, the password
forgotten and it was supplied to me sans power supply. I kept asking for
the PS, didn't have anything compatible, so I could get it going for the
owner and she eventually said *keep it*, she'd bought an iPad instead.
So, for $30 I sourced a power supply on line, upped the RAM to 8 GB and
put in an SSD with Linux Mint - and I had yet another computer. Already
have a MacBook Air so a laptop was the last thing I needed, but hey, the
Acer works, I just don't have a use for it.

I got so pissed off when M$ announced the release of Win11 and the

windoze. so here we go again, a new OS to install and hardware being
obsolete. so I decided to investigate Linux, and I liked what I saw,
especially Mint that that works very similar to windows. the other thing
annoying me about windoze is how complex it has become with sooo many
settings and places to look to do things. add to that all the security
and software needed, and the maintenance and updating of it. by contrast
Mint is so clean and simple, is free, and comes with software installed.
no AV or clean up software or maintenance needed, and you update and
install all system and app software with just one click from the Update
Manager. and with it having a GUI, learning terminal commands is not
really necessary.

need to do it edit one DLL file in notepad++ and remove all the data it
contains and save it. After doing that Windows 11 will install on any

need a functioning brain in order to permit their IQ data
to be gathered and assessed.
For that matter, how many *living* people have ever had an
IQ test? And, no, those stupid little online IQ tests
don't count. Given that one's IQ changes over time, what
relevance would a 20 or 30 year out of date IQ test have?
IQ is generally thought to have peaked between ages 20-25.
Thereafter IQ has a steady decline until age 70 whereupon
the decline becomes more rapid. My last IQ test was done
in *1978* during psychometric testing at an age where IQ
is generally thought to have peaked - and it was the real
deal, a requirement for overseas work. Would those results
be relevant now? Likely not.
you're correct about IQ. fyi I used to administer IQ tests.
IQ, and mental ability in general, deteriorates
significantly during ones lifetime. no one is exempt!
What I thought humorous was the thought of getting victims
of fatal accidents to do an IQ test. Though he survived,
Darren should have been made to do an IQ test after he
headbutted those vehicles (according to his claim) on two
separate occasions. Guaranteed to be a sub-par result,
especially in the light of his subsequent activities!
( Elon Musk is 160, and Einstein was too. Bill Gates about the same.
We had to do a battery of IQ tests at tech college. The
interesting result was that IQ appeared to be the inverse of
success in the exams.
pity the guy that shot Trump wasn't aiming at Gates, and

What a lovely fellow you are, Gates is one of the worlds major
philanthropic donors. Nobody forced you to use Windows. Maybe
your problems were due to your own incompetence.
You have to wonder what sort of person "suffers for decades"
everyone who has used windows.
So you're speaking for all Windows users? The vast majority have
had few if any problems.
it's taken them three decades to get all (most of?) the bugs out.
it wasn't until XP that windows became reasonably stable. before
that freezing, shut down issues, bsods, hardware issues, etc.,
etc., were ubiquitous. OS/2 ran each program in it's own memory
slot (for example) so a program crash didn't crash the OS
and let's not forget the endemic windows issue that has never been
fixed and never will be.. it gets slower and slower and more
clogged up over time. none of the windows 'clean up' programs can
fix it either. the computer illiterate think their computer is
'worn out' or 'dying' or 'too old' and such, so they go and buy a
new one, when the reality is there's nothing wrong with it except
that it's running windows!
Not to worry, I *inherited* a lot of computers that way, this Acer
laptop being one such. In 10 years it had hardly been used, the
password forgotten and it was supplied to me sans power supply. I
kept asking for the PS, didn't have anything compatible, so I could
get it going for the owner and she eventually said *keep it*, she'd
bought an iPad instead. So, for $30 I sourced a power supply on
line, upped the RAM to 8 GB and put in an SSD with Linux Mint - and
I had yet another computer. Already have a MacBook Air so a laptop
was the last thing I needed, but hey, the Acer works, I just don't
have a use for it.

I find I have a bit of a struggle with Windoze computers these days
too - when someone asks me to fix one up. Mac OS is so different,
Linux Mint too, so I find myself clicking in the wrong places all
the time.
I got so pissed off when M$ announced the release of Win11 and the
ending of Win10. especially since they said Win10 would be the last
windoze. so here we go again, a new OS to install and hardware being
obsolete.
I installed Windows 11 on an 'unsupported' 2007 vintage Core 2 Quad
box with 4GB RAM I had in the shed just to see what it was about. All
you need to do it edit one DLL file in notepad++ and remove all the
data it contains and save it. After doing that Windows 11 will install
on any X64 processor, even a single core.
and how long/well will it keep working on an unsupported computer? it's
unsupported for a reason.

especially Mint that that works very similar to windows. the other thing
annoying me about windoze is how complex it has become with sooo many
settings and places to look to do things. add to that all the security
and software needed, and the maintenance and updating of it. by contrast
Mint is so clean and simple, is free, and comes with software installed.
no AV or clean up software or maintenance needed, and you update and
install all system and app software with just one click from the Update
Manager. and with it having a GUI, learning terminal commands is not
really necessary.
Not necessary, maybe, but definitely handy to know. I have the same
facility in Mac OS, the terminal gives me access to all the FreeBSD Unix
goodness under the hood. Which reminds me, I need to delve into it and
change some permissions. Might do that tonight.

That's because people who use Windows install apps and use them. Linux
is *exactly* the same except it's slower out of the box and you're
limited to supported hardware for which only basic drivers exist and
apps that work. Look at GIMP for instance. It's a third rate app that
often gets spruiked as the Linux Photoshop alternative when in reality
it's closer to MSPaint and totally sucks.

achievers tended to score lower in the IQ tests. Normal exams tend to
favour plodders who learn by rote, an, in general, do not reflect real
life.
Agree, the problem I see in recent years is that people with bits of
paper that say they are qualified tend to get on better than those with
real talent but lack the paper qualifications.
You know, after reading the above from you, I'm finding it harder and
harder to believe you were ever in an apprenticeship. Did you know that,
during an apprenticeship you were tested on your understanding of
automotive theory. You were also *assessed* on your *application* of
that theory into the prac work in the classroom. As well, you were
*assessed* on your application and use of theory and prac training,
including diagnosis, *in-the-workplace*. Remember, most of your
apprenticeship wasn't spent in a TAFE classroom, it was spent (one would
hope wisely) in the workplace getting hands on experience. It's
beginning to look like you spent much of your workplace time hiding in
the shithouse. More so since you stated here that you couldn't check the
piston to valve clearance on Les' engine. FFS, there's hardly a simpler
measuring task in the trade.

Where is there an index of the year's fatality count?  Surely
the cops
must have one and it would make interesting reading?  Car
model/drunk-sober/drugs/terrain/sex/speed/day/night/wet/dry/

The cops would have most of that data. One item of data
collection might be somewhat fraught: IQ, difficult to collect
such data from dead people. Really, the victims do need a
functioning brain in order to permit their IQ data to be
gathered and assessed.
For that matter, how many *living* people have ever had an IQ
test? And, no, those stupid little online IQ tests don't count.
Given that one's IQ changes over time, what relevance would a 20
or 30 year out of date IQ test have? IQ is generally thought to
have peaked between ages 20-25.
( Elon Musk is 160, and Einstein was too. Bill Gates about the same.
We had to do a battery of IQ tests at tech college. The interesting
result was that IQ appeared to be the inverse of success in the exams.
it is not a school exam. Your approach is far too simplistic!

The only exam that I've come across that related directly to real life
was one that a friend of my fathers did. He was an architect, going for
some high level architecture qualification. The exam was to design a
monastery. He was given complete details of the requirements including
topographical data, he had to design it, and produce all the necessary
drawings to build it. He had one year to complete the project, and could
access anything that an architect normally would. It was exactly what
would be required when he was working professionally.

OTOH all the exams that we had at tech were closed book, and were
largely a test of memory, completely different to doing real work where
reference material would be available. All that we were allowed was a
standard book of mathematical tables, a slide rule, and, in advanced
maths, a table of Laplace transforms.

Your exams weren't being written with the right objective - to test
understanding and critical thinking and, in the case of trade
apprentices, the ability to diagnose. I spent a couple of decades in
training and *assessment* and I can assure you that assessment is a
whole lot more than simplistic exam questions. I have repeatedly stated
that TAFE in Victoria during my time there had combined theory and prac
classes. I spent my class time honing my skills in testing the
understanding of concepts. Diagnosis of faults is the penultimate test
of understanding and critical thinking.

Seems the apprenticeship world has moved on a lot since you did your
apprenticeship, in the 50s, right?

Where is there an index of the year's fatality count?
Surely the cops
must have one and it would make interesting reading?  Car
model/drunk-sober/drugs/terrain/sex/speed/day/night/wet/dry/
ethnicity/windy/
and even IQ?
The cops would have most of that data. One item of data
collection might be somewhat fraught: IQ, difficult to
collect such data from dead people. Really, the victims do
need a functioning brain in order to permit their IQ data to
be gathered and assessed.
For that matter, how many *living* people have ever had an IQ
test? And, no, those stupid little online IQ tests don't
count. Given that one's IQ changes over time, what relevance
would a 20 or 30 year out of date IQ test have? IQ is
generally thought to have peaked between ages 20-25.
Thereafter IQ has a steady decline until age 70 whereupon the
decline becomes more rapid. My last IQ test was done in
*1978* during psychometric testing at an age where IQ is
generally thought to have peaked - and it was the real deal,
a requirement for overseas work. Would those results be
relevant now? Likely not.
you're correct about IQ. fyi I used to administer IQ tests.
IQ, and mental ability in general, deteriorates significantly
during ones lifetime. no one is exempt!
What I thought humorous was the thought of getting victims of
fatal accidents to do an IQ test. Though he survived, Darren
should have been made to do an IQ test after he headbutted
those vehicles (according to his claim) on two separate
occasions. Guaranteed to be a sub-par result, especially in the
light of his subsequent activities!
( Elon Musk is 160, and Einstein was too. Bill Gates about the same.
We had to do a battery of IQ tests at tech college. The
interesting result was that IQ appeared to be the inverse of
success in the exams.
pity the guy that shot Trump wasn't aiming at Gates, and didn't
miss. it would have been just payback for the abomination called
windows we have suffered with for decades. :)
What a lovely fellow you are, Gates is one of the worlds maj
philanthropic donors. Nobody forced you to use Windows. Maybe
your problems were due to your own incompetence.
You have to wonder what sort of person "suffers for decades" with
a software product when there are many alternatives.
I've been using a Mac mini for about 8yrs and I've almost
forgotten how to use a Windows computer.
Yes but Mac's are specifically marketed to and designed for
simpletons :-)
ROTFL, that's not a nice thing to say about your buddy xeno.
He can take a joke.
A "Joke"? Yearh right, you were trying to get at Daryl, but didn't
think about the collateral damage and now you're trying to weasel your
way out. Pretty typical really.
What are you talking about you stupid humourless pommy fuckwit, I'm
always poking fun at Xeno for being an Apple fanboi!
Yup, and *sometimes* I bite, and sometimes I don't. ;-)

BTW, you are using Linux every day when you get onto the internet, you
just don't realise it.

Linux is an open-source operating system that is very highly
successful with servers. In fact, it’s okay to say that Linux
is the most popular choice of OS when it comes to servers. By
looking at the freshest 2024 Linux statistics, we find that
96.3% of the top 1,000,000 web servers use Linux.

Linux is also the OS of all supercomputers. There are no
Windows supercomputers.

It may be a lesser-known fact in the world, but Raspberry Pi,
Android systems, and Chrome OS are also built on the Linux
kernel.

Yup, and *sometimes* I bite, and sometimes I don't.  ;-)
BTW, you are using Linux every day when you get onto the internet,
you just don't realise it.
It may be a lesser-known fact in the world, but Raspberry Pi,
Android systems, and Chrome OS are also built on the Linux
    kernel.

Yep, all well knowm - which is I specifically say Linux isn't viable
home desktop OS and never has been.
I'm using Linux Mint and the GIU is almost the same as windoze, so no
more difficult to use than windoze, so I don't know why you say that
Because it doesn't run the apps and games I run or support all my
hardware to it's fullest capability like Windows does. Most people are
in that boat which is why the home desktop user base is tiny.
If you're a light user it might be fine until something doesn't work
yes, the biggest issue is the lack of hardware and software support, and
of course no serious gaming. but for someone who just wants to surf the
net, email, skype, and watch youtube and social media, it's fine.
So is Windows *and* you can run and use everything to it's fullest
potential. That's why Linux is still nowhere. Not helped by the fact
that the Linux community is fragmented by the number of distros and full
of people who are so rabid that they can't admit to Linux's shortcomings.

well no, because if you set the timeshift backup to daily, you always
have a backup to restore
Which you will need given the number of times a kernel upgrade causes a
no-boot situation in Mint.

Yet another Linux thing...

The cops would have most of that data. One item of data
collection might be somewhat fraught: IQ, difficult to
collect such data from dead people. Really, the victims
do need a functioning brain in order to permit their IQ
data to be gathered and assessed.
For that matter, how many *living* people have ever had
an IQ test? And, no, those stupid little online IQ tests
don't count. Given that one's IQ changes over time, what
relevance would a 20 or 30 year out of date IQ test have?
IQ is generally thought to have peaked between ages
20-25. Thereafter IQ has a steady decline until age 70
whereupon the decline becomes more rapid. My last IQ test
was done in *1978* during psychometric testing at an age
where IQ is generally thought to have peaked - and it was
the real deal, a requirement for overseas work. Would
those results be relevant now? Likely not.
you're correct about IQ. fyi I used to administer IQ
tests.
Guaranteed to be a sub-par result,

need a functioning brain in order to permit their IQ data to
be gathered and assessed.
What are you talking about you stupid humourless pommy fuckwit, I'm
always poking fun at Xeno for being an Apple fanboi!

everybody uses windows. what else should we have used? and if you were
half the programmer you think you are, you would know that windows was
a flawed system from the very beginning, constantly having to have the
leaks patched up. if it weren't for Gates we could have had a much
more stable and robust OS, except he killed off all the competition.
Maybe your problems were due to your own incompetence.
maybe your problem is that you're just an asshole
